Duke Enhancing Pediatric Safety (DEPS): Best Practices

In recent months, we have gotten several inquiries about the use of the Broselow Tape and the regulations regarding it's use in light of recent regulatory recommendations. The recommendations suggest a need to use standardized concentrations, and were developed because of reported errors that have occured when the "Rule of 6", rather than a standardized concentration methodology, has been employed when calculating medication infusions for pediatric patients.

We, along with the Institute for Safe Medication Practices do NOT recommend the removal of the Broselow Tape from "crash carts" or clinical care areas where children may be in need of emergency care. Their article is linked below.

There remains a need for standardized decision making tools that assist clinicians in choosing medication doses and equipment sizes for children and the Broselow Tape, when used correctly, is currently meeting that need. A recent message posted on the JCAHO web site, under "Frequently Asked Questions," may help to clarfiy the regulatory issue. This message is also linked below.
