Duke Enhancing Pediatric Safety (DEPS): Bioterrorism Preparedness

This Pediatric Mass Casualty Response document is a result of a Duke University Medical Center EMS for Children consensus meeting held in October 2002. Representatives from the Emergency Nurses Association, the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Fire Chiefs Association, the North Carolina College of Emergency Physicians, the North Carolina Special Operations Team, the North Carolina Pediatric Society, and the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Each of these individuals has a special interest in disaster management and emergency preparedness, and brought tremendous experience and knowledge to the table.

As has been our experience when working with our Emergency Medical Services for Children colleagues, we were once again humbled and honored that these individuals were willing to share their expertise, put aside territorial issues and work to provide a best practice recommendation so that our nation’s children might have a better chance at survival in the event of the unthinkable.
