The Division of Neurosurgery maintains an active clinical service with eleven staff neurosurgeons and a floor in Duke Hospital shared with the Division of Neurology. This space includes a sixteen-bed intensive care area, an eighteen-bed stepdown unit and the Electroencephalography, Sleep Disorders, and Evoked Potential Laboratories. The division has three dedicated operating rooms, including one for pediatric cases, and up to 6 rooms available on any given day. There is also a dedicated neuroendovascular suite for interventional cases and a radiosurgery facility with a LINAC unit and plans to purchase a second unit in the works.
 
Special clinical programs include the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, the Multidisciplinary Center for Neurovascular Surgery, the Epilepsy Program, the Center for Functional and Stereotactic Neurosurgery including Movement Disorders, the Center for Treatment of Cranial Nerve Dysfunction Syndromes, the Center for Skull Base Surgery, and the Center for Reconstruction for Peripheral Nerve Injuries. Multidisciplinary programs include the Center for Treatment of Pain, Pediatric Neurological Disorders Center, and the Center for Spinal Disorders.
 
Duke is consistently ranked as one of the top medical schools by U.S. News & World Report.   The Duke Neurosurgery program has a long and successful tradition in the training of neurosurgeons throughout the history of American neurosurgery, including those just starting to investigate the process during medical school.  Visiting medical students are always welcome and encouraged to rotate through the Duke University Neurosurgery program as a subintern.  For more information visit the Visiting Medical Student  section.
